COMPUTATIONAL STYLISTICS OF BEOWULF: LEXICAL, SEMANTIC, AND CONTEXTUAL PATTERNS THROUGH DIGITAL TOOLS

Abstract

This study investigates the text of Beowulf through lexical, semantic, and contextual analysis to explore how language constructs meaning and shapes interpretation. The focus lies in examining how the author’s linguistic choices contribute to tone, thematic depth, and reader engagement. A qualitative approach was adopted, incorporating close reading, identification of recurrent lexical patterns, and evaluation of semantic fields alongside contextual cues. Digital tools such as Voyant, AntConc, and Text Inspector were used to support data examination. The findings indicate that the text demonstrates substantial lexical richness and metaphorical layering, foregrounding themes of perception, isolation, and human vulnerability. Semantic contrasts reveal an ongoing tension between visibility and understanding, while contextual patterns uncover subtle reflections on emotional distance and detachment. Overall, the study concludes that meaning in Beowulf emerges through the interplay of diction, implied significance, and situational framing. This tri-dimensional linguistic perspective illustrates how literary language not only communicates ideas but also evokes profound emotional and philosophical resonance.
